Executive Director

Carolyn Assa was appointed Executive Director of Communications in the spring of 2008. She came to Perkins from Bunker Hill Community College where she successfully created and launched a strategic branding campaign. Prior to that, Ms. Assa worked primarily in broadcast media holding positions at network affiliates in Boston and Providence, as well for local radio stations and newspapers at various times. An award winning writer/producer she also served as an executive for ABC Television, in New York City and later Los Angeles, where she oversaw national public service initiatives including the Children First and A Better Community campaigns for the Disney-owned network. Additionally, she has worked as a teacher, an event planner and a PR consultant. Ms. Assa has always chosen projects that have given her the opportunity to bring education and family issues to the forefront of the public’s attention in a positive way.

A native of the Bay State, she holds a master’s degree in Communications from Emerson College in Boston and a bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Ms. Assa is charged with leveraging her exceptional experience and background to spread the word about Perkins’ mission to build productive and meaningful lives for children and adults around the world who are blind, deafblind, or visually impaired with or without other disabilities. In telling our story in new and exciting ways, Ms. Assa will advance Perkins’ strategic plan and help more people understand why “All we see is possibility.”
