Cape Cod Weekend
May 30 - June 1, 2008
Who: Open to students in grades 7-10. Space is limited.
What: This teen weekend will include a visit to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution where Dr. Amy Bower, an oceanographer who is visually impaired, will lead the students in hands-on learning. Students will also participate in additional activities which may include hiking, kayaking or other boating activities, beachcombing, and team-building games.
Why: The goals of this weekend are to increase awareness and appreciation for the outdoor environment and to encourage cooperation and mutual support among participants by providing an overnight recreational experience with peers who are visually impaired.
The goals of the partnership between Perkins and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are to communicate the importance of understanding how the earth works, instill the excitement of oceanographic research, and introduce students to careers in the geosciences that they might not otherwise consider as accessible to them.
When: The group will meet on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 3:00 pm in the Northeast Outreach Tower. They will depart for Cape Cod at 3:30pm. The group will travel in cars and the trip will take approximately 2 hours. They will return to Perkins on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm.
Where: The group will stay in Brewster, MA at Cape Cod Sea Camps, a co-educational residential and day camp facility.
