Taking the Braille Challenge

At the Braille Challenge™ finals on Saturday, June 28, students from around the country will compete in braille writing contests using Perkins Braillers.

Perkins School for the Blind has a strong commitment to braille literacy and this annual contest is a great way to help students who are blind and visually impaired build braille skills. Perkins Products donated gift certificates totaling $440 for each regional Braille Challenge™ preliminary event, plus the opportunity for one contestant at each to enter a drawing to win one of five Perkins electric braillers. At Perkins, we know braille literacy is imperative to the independence of people who are blind and visually impaired.

The Clearinghouse provides reliable, current, and authoritative information about all aspects of living with blindness and visual impairments. After you explore Literacy and Braille resources, don't forget to check out the many other topics.

Braille literacy is one way to reverse low employment rates for individuals with disabilities - 68 percent of Americans who are blind are unemployed. Statistics show nine out of 10 people who are blind or visually impaired and have jobs are able to read braille.
